In September, employment continued to trend up in food services and drinking places, health care, government, social assistance, and construction.

September 2024 Jobs Report

Total non-farm payroll employment increased by 254,000 in September, and the unemployment rate changed little at 4.1 percent. Employment continued to trend up in food services and drinking places, health care, government, social assistance, and construction.

The number of people jobless less than 5 weeks decreased by 322,000 to 2.1 million in September. The number of long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 weeks or more) was little changed over the month at 1.6 million. This measure is up from 1.3 million a year earlier. In September, the long-term unemployed accounted for 23.7 percent of all unemployed people.

Among those not in the labor force who wanted a job, the number of people marginally attached to the labor force increased by 204,000 to 1.6 million in September. These individuals wanted and were available for work and had looked for a job sometime in the prior 12 months but had not looked for work in the 4 weeks preceding the survey.
